LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A nonprofit utility that serves Lincoln buildings owned by the city, county and state plans to start selling excess energy to private customers.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the Lancaster County Board cleared the way Tuesday by changing the rules for District Energy Corp. Its bylaws and articles of incorporation had prevented it from also serving private customers.
District Energy has four plants that provide heating and cooling for more than 3 million square feet of space in the government buildings, using energy-efficient technology including ground source heat pumps, condensing boilers and large chillers.
Its administrator, Jason Fortik, says the utility initially plans to sell excess energy from plants near the West Haymarket area and one near the Capitol.
