Omaha Central High School building a Legacy Plaza

Omaha Central High School plans to honor its alumni and provide an outdoor space for events with a new Legacy Plaza.

Construction on the Legacy Plaza could begin next June. Central High School principal Ed Bennett says the project was the idea of Central’s alumni as a way to give back.

"The alumni really wanted an opportunity to somehow kind of honor the contributions they’ve made to Central High and to the Omaha community, as well as on the national stage. We really didn’t have a monument or a way for people to give back or for Central High to honor them, so the idea of kind of a legacy project was born."

Bennett says the Legacy Plaza will feature an amphitheater, commemorative signs, and multiple columns. He says the project adds to development in Omaha’s Highline neighborhood.

The estimated cost of the Legacy Plaza is $500,000. It’ll be paid for entirely through donations raised by the Central High School foundation.
