Omaha City Council approves amended 2013 budget

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle says he’ll accept the changes made by city council members to the 2013 budget.

The city council approved the 2013 spending plan Tuesday afternoon on a 5-2 vote. Councilmen Jean Stothert and Franklin Thompson voted no. The $319.8 million general fund budget contains no property tax increase.

Council members voted to remove raises next year for Chief of Staff Steve Oltmans, Finance Director Pam Spaccarotella, and Public Works Director Bob Stubbe. The three were given raises this budget year that Mayor Jim Suttle didn’t initially include in the 2012 plan. Last month, Suttle defended the pay raises amid criticism about how they were announced.

Other amendments put an additional $200,000 in the Planning Department budget for demolition of properties. Planning Department Director Rick Cunningham says there are more than 600 properties on the city’s demolition list.

The Convention and Visitors Bureau will receive $500,000 in 2013 for promotion.
