Omaha council OKs removal of landmark status

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha City Council has voted to remove a historic landmark designation from two downtown apartment buildings, clearing the way for them to be demolished and replaced with an office building.

The Omaha World-Herald reports the council voted unanimously Tuesday to strip the Clarinda-Page apartment buildings of their historic landmark status.

That status, which the buildings gained in 1981, had protected the buildings. The Clarinda was built in 1909, and the Page was built in 1914.

Mutual of Omaha plans to demolish the buildings and build offices at the site.

Opponents of the move say the buildings remain historically significant, but others say the structures are in poor conditions are would be too expensive to renovate.

Eight of the Clarinda's 21 units are occupied. The Page building is vacant.
