Omaha electric company proposes increase in monthly charge

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Public Power District is proposing an increase in its monthly fixed service charge for residential customers while proportionately charging less for actual usage.

Chief Financial Officer Edward Easterlin says if the change is approved, it would mean higher bills for low-use customers and lower bills for high-use customers. An average user's bill wouldn't change much.

CEO Tim Burke says the timeline to implement proposed changes is fluid.

The proposed change is a response to the same market and regulatory forces that led to a budget shortfall last year. The Omaha World-Herald reports the district will tap into reserves to make up the difference and potentially propose a rate increase of about 4 percent for 2016.
