Omaha high school band to perform in Washington DC parade

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha South High School marching band will travel to Washington D.C. next year to represent Nebraska in the 75th Anniversary Memorial Day Parade.

The Omaha World-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1Xx8nzU ) the band launched a fundraising campaign less than two months ago after being selected to march in the parade. The group raised more than $127,000 after widespread media attention and the launch of a GoFundMe online account.

Its original fundraising goal was $90,000. Donations came from all over Omaha, as well as from the rest of Nebraska and Iowa.

Band leader Joe Homan said money will go toward buses, hotels, meals and parade entry fees. Ninety-three students will go on the six-day trip from May 26 to June 1.

The parade passes the Washington Monument and the National Mall.
