Omaha man pleads not guilty in store slaying

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An 18-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to murder and weapons charges stemming from the slaying of an Omaha jewelry store owner in what police called a botched robbery.

Court records say Milton Dortch Jr. entered the pleas on Monday.

Police say store owner James Minshall Sr. was shot three times on Sept. 17 at his store, JR's Jewelry & Gifts. Prosecutors say Dortch told officers that he shot the 71-year-old Minshall because he thought Minshall was reaching for a gun.
