Omaha Mayor Announces Re-Election Bid Monday

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert is running for a second four-year term.

Stothert announced her plans Monday in front of a group of supporters that included former Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman and Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer.

Stothert says the city is in good financial shape, and she wants to keep building on the successes of her first term.

Stothert is a Republican who became Omaha's first woman mayor in 2013 when she beat Mayor Jim Suttle.

Democratic State Sen. Heath Mello has announced plans to challenge Stothert for mayor.
