Omaha Mayor appears to overcome recall effort

By Katie Knapp Schubert and Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle appears to have overcome an effort to remove him from office.

With all precincts reporting, 38,841 voters voted "no" to remove Suttle from office and 37,198 voted "yes." The race remained close all night, with Suttle leading at one point by only two votes.

But The Douglas County Election Commission says 5,700 ballots remain to be counted, including 5,000 early ballots. Results will be certified February fourth.

The recall election was Omaha's second in 24 years. Mike Boyle was recalled in 1987.
