Omaha mayor won't undergo surgery following fall

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert's office says she will not need surgery after a fall earlier this week.

Stothert was hospitalized Thursday after she fractured a vertebra in a fall while walking three dogs.

Carrie Murphy, a spokeswoman for the mayor, told the Omaha World-Herald that Stothert was walking her two dogs and her son's dog on a golf course near her house. When a groundskeeper came by with a dog not on a leash, Stothert's golden retriever mix gave chase, dragging Stothert with her.

Murphy says Stothert walked home, and her husband drove her to the hospital.

Murphy says she doesn't know when the mayor will return to the office.
