Omaha NAACP seeks to increase membership
Omaha, NE – The Omaha branch of the NAACP is celebrating the national organization's 100th birthday.
The NAACP was founded February 12, 1909. Last Thursday, leaders of the Omaha chapter gathered at their 24th Street headquarters to celebrate the milestone. There are more than 300,000 members of the NAACP, according to the organization's web site.
Stephen Jackson is President of the Omaha branch of the NAACP. He says they want to increase local membership threefold over the next two years. Jackson says the NAACP is a member-driven organization, and it helps build strong communities.
The Omaha branch is donating $500 to the national organization to help advance membership efforts. Locally, the Omaha NAACP sponsors an academic, technical, and creativity competition for minority high school students called ACT-SO.
