Omaha planning to use sub as Cold War memorial

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A new memorial in the shape of the USS Omaha submarine is being planned to honor veterans who served during the Cold War.

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle and parks officials will hold a groundbreaking for the memorial Friday at Levi Carter Park. But donations will still be needed to complete the memorial.

The memorial is designed to replicate the outer hull and the sail and rudder of the decommissioned USS Omaha submarine.

The USS Omaha was a Los Angeles class sub that served from 1978 to 1995.

The memorial is supposed to honor all veterans who served since World War II.
