Funeral arrangements are set for a 29-year-old Omaha Police officer killed Wednesday in a shootout.

Officer Kerrie Orozco died when she was shot by the suspect, Marcus Wheeler. Orozco's visitation is Monday at St. John's Catholic Church at Creighton University. It's open to friends and the public from 4 to 6 p.m. A vigil will follow at 7 p.m. Orozco's funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Orozco was one of four Omaha Police officers attempting to serve a warrant Wednesday on Wheeler. Schmaderer says Wheeler opened fire when police first encountered him at Vane Street and Martin Avenue. Wheeler fled toward a home on Martin Avenue, and three additional officers, including Orozco, responded to the scene.

Wheeler and Sergeant Jeff Kopietz exchanged gunfire. Kopietz was the only officer to fire a weapon. One of the bullets fired by Wheeler struck Officer Orozco above her protective vest.

Orozco and Wheeler died at CHI Creighton University Medical Center. Officer Orozco was a seven-year veteran of OPD and a member of the gang unit.

Wheeler was a convicted felon and known gang member, who was wanted in connection with a shooting last fall. Chief Schmaderer says the actions of his officers were justified and Wheeler was dangerous.
