Omaha Royals considering relocation options

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – The Omaha Royals are considering relocation options both inside and outside the Omaha metro area.

Royals General Manager Martie Cordaro says talks with the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority are not ongoing, but not dead. Talks between the two sides are at a standstill. Cordaro says the fan experience, economics of the agreement, and scheduling are sticking points of any agreement with MECA.

Cordaro says he's fielding calls from other locations interested in landing the Royals. Sarpy County is also interested. They're currently doing a feasibility study to determine if a minor league ballpark should be built there. Cordaro says relocating the team to Sarpy County is an option, but it's not the only option.

Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey issued a statement earlier this week calling the Royals decision to seek out other locations disappointing. Fahey says he's hopeful an agreement can still be reached.

Cordaro says the Royals' goal is to decide on a location by April 2009.
