From Omaha to Shizuoka: sister cities work together to help Japan

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – Omaha is working with its first sister city to support Japan following that country's earthquake and tsunami.

The Omaha Sister Cities Association and Shizuoka, Japan, are raising funds for the relief efforts. Joe Arbona of the Sister Cities Coordinating Council says Shizuoka didn't see the destruction that other parts of Japan experienced, although the city did experience a magnitude 6.5 earthquake last week.

Shizuoka became Omaha's sister city in 1965. Arbona says it's one of the strongest sister cities relationships Omaha has. Shizuoka is located about an hour south of Tokyo, and has a population of about 470,000.

The earthquake and tsunami killed more than 9,000 people.
