Omaha Spring Cleanup Is Underway

For those needing to dispose of large bulky items that cannot go out with curbside trash, Omaha’s annual Spring Cleanup is taking place across the city each Saturday through May 19th from 9 to 2.

Keep Omaha Beautiful’s Executive Director, Chris Stratman, says Spring Cleanup helps residents and the environment -- by helping keep unwanted items away from bodies of water or wooded areas, or from becoming havens for pests.

Stratman gives examples of the types of items typically received:

“Old broken furniture, appliances, maybe like ripped up mattresses and carpet, old swing-sets, lumber, broken bicycles, things like that. Another item that they do accept is large yard waste items such as maybe large trees or branches, maybe large stumps. They can come to one of the sites and the City will provide what’s called a yard-waste voucher, and they take that to River City Recycling on 60th and Harrison, and they compost and chip that material up.”

Stratman says there are 10-15 sites open each Saturday, with one designated to accept regulated items like large appliances, lead acid batteries, and tires without rims. Household hazardous waste is not accepted but can be taken to Under the Sink from 9 to 4 on Cleanup days.

Stratman encourages patience and flexibility when dropping off at Cleanup sites. He says the sites are volunteer-run, and reminds people that the volunteers do not help unload items.
