Omaha superintendent apologizes to parent

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Public Schools superintendent has apologized to a parent who claimed the school leader threatened him over complaints about a principal.

Superintendent Mark Evans said at a school board meeting Monday that he didn't intent to restrict the speech of Alex Gates.

Gates asked board members in October to create a process that lets people formally request an investigation and removal of an ineffective principal. Gates contacted the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska after he said Evans later threatened him with a lawsuit for defamation or slander.

The ACLU wrote a letter to Evans and asserted Gates' free speech rights.

The Omaha World-Herald reports Gates appeared at Monday's meeting and reiterated his request for a process to investigate principals. He also inquired about any sanctions against Evans.
