Omaha's Finest to be honored this Thursday at Officer of the Year Awards Lunch

This Thursday, the Omaha Police Foundation will present its 16th annual Omaha Police Officer of the Year Awards.

The luncheon takes place at the Scott Conference Center starting at 11:30 a.m.  Dr. Jack Lewis, Chairman of the Board of the Omaha Police Foundation, says the board is comprised of 18 community volunteers.

Lewis says the purpose of the board is to raise money through donations and grants to improve police equipment, recruitment and training.

He says during his tenure as chairman the board has raised four million dollars which has helped police in a number of areas.

"And at our luncheon we always have the SWAT van and we are working on the van that goes out to the crime scenes.  Using the van, police are able to collect and test for things like fingerprints and things like that.  We’ve put new lights in the helicopter.”

Lewis says nine officers and one non-sworn support personnel will be recognized at the luncheon for their outstanding performance.

He says outside the Scott Conference Center, there will be an outdoor exhibit of various law enforcement units and vehicles.
