Omaha's Siena/Francis House on pace to have a record year

A record 508 people stayed at Siena/Francis House’s shelters Monday night.

In a news release, shelter officials say the facilities have a total of 341 beds. Executive Director Mike Saklar says Siena/Francis was able to accommodate the additional people needing a place to stay. “We ended up sleeping 167 men and women on the floor. The women, it’s so overcrowded that we utilized three conference rooms for women and families.”

The Siena/Francis House womens’ and families shelter is operating at 215 percent of capacity.

Saklar expects Siena Francis will break every record this year in terms of the numbers of men, women, and children staying at the shelter.

By the end of 2012, the shelter will have served 450,000 meals. Through October, Siena/Francis House provided 136,335 nights of shelter to homeless Omaha men, women, and children.
