OPPD board approves rate hike

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha Public Power District customers will pay more for electricity in January. The utility's board unanimously approved increasing rates 6.9 percent on Thursday. Higher costs, particularly the cost of restoring Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant, drove the rate increase.

For residential customers, rates will go up by 7.7 percent a month, which OPPD estimates will mean an average increase of $7.30 per month.

Industrial customers will see an 8.5 percent rate increase, but commercial rates will only go up 5 percent.

OPPD is a customer-owned utility that serves more than 352,000 customers in all or parts of 13 counties in eastern and southeast Nebraska.
