OPPD Looks to the Future with Renewable Energy

Omaha Public Power District released its 2015 annual report this month.

The theme was “Powering the Future.”  Tim Yager, Manager of Sustainability for OPPD, says at the end of this year, OPPD will have a little over 800 megawatts of wind power as part of their fleet.

Yager says with that 800 megawatts, renewables will make up a little over 30% of OPPD’s retail load, or the amount of energy their customers are using.

"We also have a landfill gas facility which is renewable energy.  And it’s smaller. It’s only 6 megawatts but we’ve had that in service since 2002 and it’s a very strong performer for us.”

Yager says the methane gas at the landfill is used to create electricity.  He says OPPD is committed to renewable energy as the utility moves forward.

He says solar power may be an option in the future if OPPD finds it’s the right thing to do for their customers.
