OPPD Management recommends ceasing operations at Fort Calhoun Station

At yesterday’s OPPD board meeting, OPPD management made two major recommendations.

President and CEO Tim Burke says one is that OPPD would have no general rate increases for five years.

Burke says this would move them close to meeting one of the strategic directives put forth by the OPPD board, which is to drive rates to 20% below the regional average between now and 2021.

Burke says this is possible largely because of the other major recommendation made to the board yesterday.

"To cease electric generation at Fort Calhoun commensurate with the planned outage late this fall in the October/November timeframe.  And that we would move the plant to cold shut down and begin our decommissioning process.”

Burke says the OPPD board will review the recommendations and is likely to vote on them at the June 16th board meeting.  He says the recommendation came after a thorough review of OPPD’s resource planning efforts.
