OPS faces $22 million budget deficit

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – The Omaha Public Schools district faces a $22 million dollar budget deficit next fiscal year.

OPS officials presented the 2011-12 budget projections at a recent meeting. Two public forums were held this week on the budget, with two more scheduled. Dennis Pool, Assistant Superintendent of Administration, says OPS already made significant budget cuts this fiscal year, with a reduction of 180 employees.

Pool says more than 80 percent of the school district's budget is personnel costs. He says everything is on the table and hopes the budget forums will lead to new ideas for cutting the budget.

The forums are February 26th at 10am at the OPS TAC building and March third at South High School. The evening forum begins at 6:30 pm.
