OPS' King Science and Technology Magnet is awarded funds from Big Red Keno Science & Math Program

Big Red Keno Science & Math Program awarded more than $70,000 to several OPS schools as well as two afterschool YMCA programs in Lincoln and schools in Norfolk and Fremont.

Maria Buckner, Principal of King Science and Technology Magnet Center in Omaha, says when the district let them know the grants were available, her Magnet coordinator applied and they were awarded $7,500.

Buckner says her staff was excited because they had talked about offering an Earth Day event prior to that but would have had to raise funds to make it happen.

She says the Go Green Earth Day Event takes place on April 22nd.

"We are focusing on recycling, rethinking and reusing.  So how can we make the Earth a better place by rethinking the way we do things and by recycling?  So the kids will have different stations and one of them will be a recycle fashion show.”

Buckner says the grant funds will help provide recycling bins and seeds for trees.  She says the Earth Day Event will be full of activities including a chance for students to build and race solar-powered cars on a track outside the school.
