OPS officials to meet with family of Nathan Hale student who drowned

Omaha Public Schools officials plan to meet soon, possibly Wednesday, with the family of a Nathan Hale Middle School student who drowned.

12-year-old Demariont’e Brown-Elliott died last Thursday, shortly after drowning in a swimming pool at Nathan Hale Middle School. Omaha Police were called to the school just after 1:30 pm last Thursday for a report of a possible drowning.

OPS superintendent Mark Evans says they can’t release additional information about the incident at this point.

"While we understand the desire of the broader community for more details regarding what happened at Nathan Hale, OPS is not currently permitted to share information regarding Demariont’e to anyone other than his mother."

Evans’ comments came at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. He called on the community to provide support to Brown-Elliott’s family and the Nathan Hale community.
