LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska legislative committee is calling for more prison administrators to lose their jobs as part of an overhaul of the Department of Correctional Services.
The committee released a final report Monday that proposed 16 reforms for Nebraska's problem-plagued corrections department.
The report calls for the termination of three prison administrators: Kyle Poppert, Dr. Mark Weilage and Larry Wayne. Lawmakers say Poppert was partly responsible for the hundreds of inmates whose sentences were miscalculated, while Wayne was involved in the case of Nikko Jenkins.
Jenkins, who begged for mental health treatment, was released directly from segregation and went on to kill four people in Omaha.
The report also suggests additional resources for mental health services and an overhaul of the state's use of segregation.
