Plan would turn Lincoln's old auditorium into marketplace

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Under a plan still in the draft stage, the Lincoln's old Pershing auditorium would be given new life as a modern food market with space for restaurants, a greenhouse and loft apartments.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the plan was given to a mayoral committee last week. The city also is considering tearing down the auditorium, which closed in August after more than 57 years of operation. This week the city has opened up the building to people who want to buy pieces of the Pershing at auction.

The plan calls for renovating the auditorium and creating an administrative structure for a regional food hub to connect ag producers, consumers and distributors. The plan is being proposed by the Joslyn Institute for Sustainable Communities.
