Police recruit class delayed to save money

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – Omaha's fiscal year 2009 budget cuts mean a Police Department recruiting class will be delayed.

Mayor Mike Fahey announced the six million dollars worth of budget cuts last week. A Police recruit class of 42 officers originally scheduled to begin next May will instead begin in September. Police Chief Eric Buske says that means the new officers won't be on Omaha's streets until early 2010.

Buske says the decision to delay a recruit class was made because that would cause the least amount of disruption in public safety.

Delaying the recruit class is expected to save the city $700,000.
