Power restored to almost all customers in downtown Omaha following explosion, fire

Updated 5:15 pm: OPPD says power is back on for all but four customers in downtown Omaha following an explosion and fire.

OPPD is still trying to determine what caused that explosion and fire Sunday night at 17th Street and St. Mary’s Avenue. More than 2,000 OPPD customers in downtown Omaha were without electricity for several hours Sunday night. That number was down to 100 customers as of mid-afternoon.

Crews had to pull out and replace cables in three manholes where infrastructure was severely damaged by fire or heat. Utility officials say no one was injured.
