President Obama declares January National Mentoring Month

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – In celebration of National Mentoring Month, Midlands Mentoring Partnership is offering several events for members in the community.

Graduate Assistant Whitney Mastin says the purpose of this month's events is to encourage people to give mentoring a try, as there is a need for mentors in the Omaha area. Mastin says special activities this month include a Mentoring Conference on Wednesday, January 26th and a Mentoring Fair Saturday, January 22nd at Westroads Mall. She says, "representatives from all of our organizations will be out at Westroads and will have informational pamphlets so you can learn about the different programs." The Mentoring Conference will feature several breakout sessions in the morning and in the afternoon that talk about how to get involved in mentoring, give mentors ideas of activities to do with their mentees, and talk about ways to pass on positive behaviors to mentees. Mastin says, "it's a great opportunity for people who are interested in being mentors to come and see what it's all about."

The Mentoring Fair takes place Saturday the 22nd from Noon to 4:00 at Westroads Mall near Dick's Sporting Goods. The National Mentoring Conference will be held at Holiday Inn Coco Keys on the 26th.
