Program aims to help poor kids overcome education obstacles

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Six Omaha-area school districts next year will test a new concept in early childhood education that's aimed at helping kids from poor families surmount educational obstacles.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that more details of the plan are scheduled to be released Friday by officials of the Douglas and Sarpy county Learning Community.

The comprehensive program of birth-to-age-8 interventions will be launched at 10 sites serving 12 schools. At least half of the schools' students are eligible for free or reduced-price school lunches.

The program is aimed at eliminating or reducing social and achievement gaps between children in poor families and their better-off peers. It will include home visits for children from birth to age 3.
