Program to look at health disparities

By Cheril Lee

Omaha, NE – The Douglas County Health Department will present a forum on Thursday focused on health disparities.

Stephen Jackson is the Supervisor for Health Promotions with the Douglas County Health Department. He says the program is a follow-up to the 2010 regional conversations which were funded by the Nebraska Office of Health Disparities and Health Equity. Jackson says the idea for the program is based on a documentary called 2011 Unnatural Causes. He says the documentary looks at the role social circumstance plays in healthcare. Jackson says there are three potential topics to be discussed at Thursday's forum, "How does distribution of power, wealth and resources shape opportunities for health? Can racism become embedded in the body and affect health outcomes? And why is your street address such a strong predictor of your health?"

The 2011 Unnatural Causes program begins Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Scott Conference Center on UNO's South Campus. For more information, the number is 402-561-7570.
