Protection, detection, reporting: seminar focuses on identity theft

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and seminar next week focuses on how to keep your information safe online.

Cyber security experts from the business, education, and private security fields will present at the Identity Theft Prevention Seminar on October 21st. The FTC says 2.6 million identity theft complaints were reported last year.

The Salvation Army and Cox Communications are hosting the seminar. Salvation Army of Omaha spokeswoman Susan Eustice says they’ll share some ways you can prevent being a victim of identity theft.

"Things like shredding documents, community shredding events, those type of things, subscribing perhaps to a protection service like Lifelock. Certainly changing your passwords, and something as simple as getting a RFID sleeve for your credit card. That’s that radio frequency identity sleeve that can protect your credit card."

There will also be presentations on how to detect and report identity theft.

The seminar will be held at UNO’s Scott Conference Center. There are two sessions and the registration deadline is Friday.
