Public Art Project to Honor Omaha's Fallen Police Officers

A public art project meant to celebrate the legacies of Omaha’s fallen police officers is based on a similar project in Chicago.

Molly Skold, VP of Marketing and Communications at Midtown Crossing, says the Chicago project is called Horses of Honor.

She says the Omaha project mirrors it.  Eight life-sized horse statues will be designed by area artists, with each commemorating a fallen Omaha police officer.

Skold says seven of the statues will be located in Turner Park and one will be at the Omaha Police Department on 15th street in downtown.

"There will be a sponsor for every horse and every horse will commemorate a fallen officer.  Each sponsor will choose the artist they will work with.  We know many of the sponsors we have now are interviewing artists, paying special attention to the kind of artist they want.  And the artists will be designing and painting the horses throughout the next three months"

Skold says the statues will honor what the Omaha Police Department does for the community and shows how valuable they are to us and our safety.

She says the horses will be unveiled on Friday, May 20th at 10 a.m. at Midtown Crossing.  More information is available at midtowncrossing.com.
