Public hearing Tuesday on Omaha Mayor's 2016 budget plan

A public hearing is scheduled for this evening onOmaha’s 2016 budget.

Mayor Jean Stothert introduced the $356.7 million general fund budget on July 21st. The budget accounts for 840 Omaha Police officers, although that number could increase to 851. The proposal also funds a Fire Department recruit class of 15, bringing that department’s sworn staff to 657.

Stothert’s budget puts an additional one million dollars in to job training and workforce development programs, including $440,000 for Heartland Workforce Solutions. It fully funds the city’s Human Rights and Relations Department, which would add three staff members.

An additional $1.1 million would go toward street repair and resurfacing projects, for a total of $8.4 million.

The public hearing is tonight at 7 pm in the Legislative Chambers at the City-County building. The Omaha City Council is scheduled to vote on the budget August 25th.
