Radio ads to explain Nebraska death penalty ballot language

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A public service message to reduce possible confusion about Nebraska's death penalty ballot measure is set to air on radio stations throughout the state.

Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale said Monday that the ads will explain the language used for Referendum 426, a measure that could preserve the death penalty after lawmakers voted to abolish it.

Voting "repeal" on the ballot will keep the death penalty as a possible punishment, while voting "retain" will uphold the Legislature's decision to replace it with a sentence of life in prison.

Death penalty opponents have created a group, Retain a Just Nebraska, as a reminder to voters. Nebraskans for the Death Penalty has sent postcards to voters urging them to vote "repeal."

Sample ballot language is available online at www.sos.ne.gov.
