Omaha, NE – The Mayor Suttle Recall Committee collected 37,219 signatures during their 30-day petition drive.
Recall Committee members turned in petitions Friday afternoon at the Douglas County Election Commission. They need 26,643 valid signatures to force a recall election.
Committee spokesman Jeremy Aspen says he's confident the signatures could stand up to a possible lawsuit. He believes after the signatures are verified, the Committee will still have more than enough valid entries. The Election Commission has 15 days to validate the signatures.
In a statement, Mayor Jim Suttle says he won't resign. The statement says "Mayor Suttle has balanced the budget in spite of major financial challenges, he has made city services more efficient and cost-effective, restored the city's AAA bond rating saving taxpayers millions of dollars, and is actively working to recruit businesses and jobs to Omaha."
The deadline for verification of signatures is December 4.
