Red cross officials: interest in volunteering up following Haiti earthquake

By Katie Schubert

Omaha, NE – An official with the American Red Cross Heartland Chapter says interest in volunteering is up following the earthquake in Haiti.

At least 50,000 people are believed dead and most of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is destroyed. An American Red Cross campaign allowing people to donate to Haiti relief via text message has raised more than $8 million so far.

Heartland Chapter spokeswoman Danelle Schlegelmilch says since the Haiti earthquake, they've received a lot of calls from people interested in volunteering or donating. You can find out how to do both at the chapter's web site, www.redcrossomaha.org.

Schlegelmilch says the American Red Cross is sending supplies of food, water and other essentials to Haiti to help the victims of the magnitude 7.0 quake.
