Red Cross recommends two winter weather survival kits

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – The American Red Cross recommends putting together two winter weather survival kits, one for your car and one for your home.

Heartland Chapter spokeswoman Danelle Schlegelmilch says a car kit should include a flashlight, battery-powered or crank radio, bottled water and snacks. You should also have blankets, a coat, mittens or gloves, and boots in your vehicle in case you're stranded for an extended period of time.

A home kit should include many of the same items, along with a weeks' worth of any medications you're taking and an emergency contact list. Schlegelmilch says a home kit should include at least one gallon of water per day for each person in the home.

Last week's storm dumped more than a foot of snow in some areas.
