Report Shows Nebraska Non-White Children Falling Behind

The Annie E. Casey Foundation has just released its 2017 Race For Results, Building a Path to Opportunity for All Children.

Chrissy Tonkinson, Research Coordinator at Voices for Children in Nebraska, says the report gives a score for five different racial groups on several indicators. She says, not surprisingly, the report shows Nebraska is a pretty good place for white children.  However, she says it reveals Nebraska children of color are underperforming their counterparts across the country.

“Our black and African-American kids are facing the greatest challenges to opportunity, with a score of 348, and that’s out of a possible 1000. Just ahead of them are Hispanic kids and American-Indian kids, at 393 points and 398 points, respectively. Conversely, our white, non-Hispanic kids have a score of 763."

Tonkinson says this report shows Nebraska children of color, in particular, need more programs to help them meet important developmental milestones.  Additionally, she says more access to educational and employment opportunities are needed for them and their parents.

The entire Race for Results report is available at datacenter.kidscount.com--  under publications.
