The day after suffering a severe groin injury on Wednesday night, Kansas City Royals All-Star outfielder and Husker alum Alex Gordon was on crutches at Kauffman Stadium. He hopes to be playing again in September.
Any thought of a September return looked grim when Gordon collapsed on the warning track while chasing a deep fly ball to left. Gordon said he knew right away he’d be sidelined.
“You know when I was running after the ball, at the last second, I pushed off my leg and that’s when I felt the pop,” said Gordon. “When that happened, I tried to stay on my feet. I braced the best way I can. That’s when you saw my leg give out. I fell to the ground and had a sharp pain.”
It’s the second straight year an injury will prevent Gordon from playing in the All-Star game.
After the 8-3 win over Tampa Thursday afternoon, Royals manager Ned Yost said Adam Jones of Baltimore will replace Gordon in the All-Star game’s starting lineup next Tuesday.
