The Salvation Army opens its cooling centers

When it’s 90 degrees or warmer for at least two consecutive days, the Salvation Army opens its community cooling centers.

Susan Eustice, Director of Public Relations, says the Salvation Army also provides cold bottled water for individuals who stop by the cooling centers.

Until the heat wave is past, Eustice says the cooling centers will remain open during the day at several locations in the metro including the Burrows Center in Benson, the Kroc Center and the Lied Renaissance Center.

“The Salvation Army is offering relief from the heat during this impossible heat wave.  Several community cooling centers are open for those who need a break from this extreme heat.  Those without air conditioning and those who have air but cannot afford to turn them on are the people we are targeting with this.”

Eustice says the Salvation Army is also in its 36th year of the summer fan program where those who need fans may apply for one.

She says priority is given to those over the age of 50 or who have medical disabilities.

Donations of bottled water and new fans are needed.  For more information on the cooling centers or for donation information, the website issalarmyomaha.org
