Salvation Army's Winter Night Watch Canteens Back on Omaha Streets

The Salvation Army’s Winter Night Watch program served around 14,000 meals in Omaha last winter and handed out roughly 9,000 coats, gloves, scarves and socks.

The mobile canteens resumed their runs on December 1st and will go through February 28th.

Susan Eustice, Director of Public Relations for the Salvation Army, says the need for the warm meals and winter clothing may be even greater this year.

“Here at the Salvation Army we are seeing terrible situations caused this year by the higher cost of food. In fact, people are going hungry. The Salvation Army’s Winter Night Watch canteen is out there five nights a week to provide them with warm food and clothing for the homeless and near homeless who are living from paycheck to paycheck. So, please considering helping the Winter Night Watch program – we don’t ask hungry people to come to us, we go to them.”

Eustice says Winter Night Watch is in need of good, used winter clothing, especially all sizes of men’s coats. Donations should be taken to the Salvation Army Disaster Services Building at 10619 Burt Street.  She says monetary donations are also needed, and that some of the money placed in the Salvation Army Red Kettles goes to the Winter Night Watch program.
