Sandhill cranes return to Platte River Valley

By Katie Knapp

Omaha, NE – The sandhill cranes have returned to the Platte River Valley. The cranes migrate to the area near Gibbon and Brad Mellema of the Nicholson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary says now is a good time to see the birds.

Rowe Sanctuary is giving guided tours through April sixth. Mellema says the best times to see the cranes are at sunrise and sunset. You can also see the cranes during midday by driving along county roads in the Sanctuary area.

Mellema says the key to crane watching is knowing the birds' habits. He says the best way to observe the cranes is from established viewing areas or from your vehicle.
