SBA Offers Boots to Business Program for Vets

The Small Business Association’s Boots to Business program is about assisting transitioning service members.

Michael Foutch is Economic Development Specialist for the SBA’s Nebraska Office. He says veterans who participate get lessons in education benefits and how to put together a resume.

They also learn about entrepreneurship.  Foutch says veterans who are retiring already have medical coverage and a retirement check coming, and are in a great position to start a small business.

He says veterans also have the discipline and skills that can be applied toward entrepreneurship.

"The reason why we are doing all of this now is the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans is much more and in some cases double that of general population.  So there’s a really urgent need to help these veterans with their transition to civilian life.”

Foutch says every year the SBA helps more than 200,000 veterans start and grow their small businesses.
