Scammers targeting veterans

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – A new scam targets veterans who get prescriptions through the VA Medical Center.

The scam works like this: scammers call veterans, saying they need credit card information to pay a pharmacy bill for a prescription. VA of Nebraska-western Iowa spokesman Will Ackerman says prescriptions are handled at a central distribution point. No one from the VA calls veterans to get credit card information for paying a pharmacy bill.

Ackerman says if a veteran receives one of these phone calls, they should immediately hang up and call the Omaha VA Medical Center. He says the billing and pharmacy departments can verify the information.

So far, no area veterans have notified the VA that they've been victimized by the scam.
