Science Cafe focuses on genetics, environment and health

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – The role of genetics versus environment in determining a person's health is the focus of UNMC's next Science Caf .

The event is Tuesday evening at the Slowdown in Omaha. This topic of this month's Science Caf is "Modifying Our Genetic Blueprint: Nature versus Nutrition." Dr. Bruce Buehler is the presenter. He says many people don't understand the role environmental factors play in prolonging the onset of diseases such as cancer.

Dr. Buehler says some diseases are entirely genetic and doctors can only treat those conditions. However, others "need a switch turned on." He says exercise, a healthy diet, antioxidants and vitamins can help even those with a genetic predisposition to a disease stay healthy and prolong the onset of a medical condition.
