Scottsbluff attorney enters race for Nebraska Governor

By Katie Knapp Schubert

Omaha, NE – Nebraska Democrats have a candidate for Governor.

Scottsbluff lawyer Mike Meister announced earlier this week he plans to seek the Democratic nomination for Governor. His announcement comes after former candidate Mark Lakers dropped out of the race. Lakers' campaign is under investigation following the discovery of irregularities in campaign finance reports.

Meister says his campaign will focus on better ways to do things in state government. "One of the things that we've been touting is the idea that perhaps if the state took over the schools, so that the schools could then educate and not focus on physical plants, that might be a way to change the way we do state aid," Meister says.

Meister says beginning a campaign for Governor with four months until the election is a daunting task. Right now he's working with an all-volunteer staff to set up campaign offices in Omaha and Lincoln.

The Nebraska Democrats' convention is this weekend in Lincoln. Meister is expected to be confirmed then as the gubernatorial candidate.

The midterm election is November second.
