Sen. Fischer supports President Obama's nominee for Stratcom commander

President Obama’s nominee to lead U.S. Strategic Command is one step closer to Senate confirmation.

The Senate Armed Services Committee approved Admiral Cecil Haney's nomination Tuesday. U.S. Senator Deb Fischer of Nebraska, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, says Admiral Haney, who's a former Stratcom deputy commander, understands Nebraska.

"He’s no stranger to the mission of Stratcom, and he’s no stranger to the people of Nebraska. I was especially pleased to hear his comments on the national importance of a new command and control center that’s being built at Offutt Air Force Base."

Admiral Haney is awaiting confirmation by the full Senate. If confirmed he’ll succeed General Robert Kehler as commander. Haney is commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Fischer’s comments came Wednesday during her weekly conference call with Nebraska media.
