Senate Candidates Debate Issues

Former Midland University President and Republican Ben Sasse is facing off against lawyer and Democrat Dave Domina for the US Senate seat being vacated by Republican Mike Johanns.

Last month, the two debated issues including immigration, foreign policy and public opinion polls that show few voters approve of the job Congress is doing.

Sasse and Domina participated in a NET and Nebraska Broadcasters Association debate last month.

When asked what actions the US Senate should take to help secure the U-S border, Sasse said moral clarity is needed from the president that our borders are meant to be closed, not open.

Congress should be writing immigration law, not the president by unilateral action.  We should also have a customs and border patrol agency that has sufficient congressional oversight so there’s clarity about their metrics and procedures.  We are trying to be sure that the US decides for the good of all citizens who should be coming and going.

Domina said borders don’t work to keep people out.  He said he feels the problem is the civil war going in Mexico driven by the drug cartel.

"One of the things we could do to help the Mexican government is to help dry up the demand for illegal drugs by recognizing the demand that drives much of the controversy is within the United States.  The second thing we could do to help secure the border is to recognize when people are less desperate, they don’t crash borders.  They use lawful processes to apply for new opportunities.”

Nonpartisan independents Jim Jenkins and Todd Watson are also competing in the US Senate race. The General Election takes place Tuesday, November 4th
